What is a VPN?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. It allows you to surf the web anonymously and securely from anywhere. VPNs protect you by creating an encrypted tunnel that connects your computer to the Internet, Wi-Fi hotspots and other networks.

How does a VPN service work?

A VPN works by encrypting your internet connection and swaps out your IP address (which identifies your device) for another one. Here’s how it works.

1
CONNECT

Switch on your VPN to access the internet. Instead of using your IP address you’ll be given one of ours.

2
ENCRYPT

Your internet connection is now encrypted using bank‑grade standards. Nothing can be intercepted, seen or tracked.

3
FREEDOM

You’re free to surf the web privately, securely and with no restrictions. Just as the internet should be.

What can I use a VPN for?

A VPN opens up the world of the internet to you by keeping you secure, anonymous and private online. No matter what sites you visit, emails you send or receive or what you buy online, nothing can be seen by anyone.

Online privacy
ONLINE PRIVACY

Maintain your online privacy by masking your IP address to prevent your ISP (Internet Service Provider) from being able to track, store or even sell your browsing data.

STREAMING

Stream your favorite TV shows from wherever you are in the world using one of our dedicated streaming servers.

Access
ACCESS RESTRICTED SITES

Access sites that are restricted by certain governments even if you live in one of those countries.

Public WiFi
SECURE PUBLIC WI-FI

Safely complete tasks such as online banking even if you’re connected to Public Wi‑Fi.

Why should I be worried about my privacy online?

The development of the internet and the restrictions governments are placing on it means it’s even easier than ever before to have your entire life exposed online. Online banking, browsing history, private messages — these are all tracked and stored by your Internet Service Provider. In the US they can even sell this data to advertisers.

Which means you’re wide open to all sorts of advertiser schemes. They could even charge you more for your favorite subscription services once they know how much you love it! As well as this there’s the access to your private messages, adult content viewings and entire browsing history — all open to tracking, storing and selling by your ISP when you don’t have a VPN service.

Are VPNs legal?

Obviously, a VPN will help with all that, but here’s the catch: some countries are less fond of that technology than others. For example, some governments restrict access to any website that contradicts their ideology, while companies, such as video streaming services, serve up different content for different regions and enforce other local restrictions. Other countries take the less crap approach of supporting free and open internet, but sadly that list seems to grow smaller by the day.

As well as our bank-grade encryption levels and expertise as part of the Avast family we also give you all these added benefits to boot.
